Jojoba is one of the most important ingredients in skincare. Chemically it is the closest match to human sebum the body's own skin oil and is produced from the bean of the jojoba plant grown in deserts. An illustration of the use of Jojoba and a nice recipe is one for shaving oil and aftershave lotion (facial lotion, shaving oil and aftershave lotion all in one) is found in Erich Kellers Aromatherapy Handbook. He wrotes"after shaving the facial skin needs a soothing astringent and antiinflamatory lotion. The best base is jojoba. Ingredients: 100ml witch hazel or jojoba, 15-20 drops essential oils. Procedure: put all the ingredients in a bottle and shake well. Men usually prefer essential oils with uplifting woody scents like sandalwood and cedarwood. (IB note sandalwood is now very expensive and cedarwood is a cheaper and more environmentally friendly option). I always add two drops of the antiseptic clove or cinnamon oil to my lotion. Made with Jojoba oil the lotion is also anti inflammatory, moisturing and beneficial to the skin. I prefer this lotion because it is like a facial lotion and an aftershave lotion all in one (IB note Jojoba serves as a shaving oil as well)." Aromatherapy Handbook p118. Jojoba used to be very expensive but is now within everyones range. Ours is sourced directly from the plantations of the worlds largest producer and so is the freshest available on the market. Essential oils used can be 15 drops sandalwood, 15 drops cedarwood or say 5 drops sandalwood, 5 drops cedarwood and 5 drops ylang ylang. If used as a feminine shaving oil nothing beats the scent and action of neroli or rose but not all budgets stretch to that.
