Strengthening, rejuvenating and unifying. Known in biblical times as Nard, this oil was used in religious ceremonies as it was believed to instil inner peace and nourish the soul. It is used in aromatherapy today to relax states of agitation and to rejuvenate mature skin. It is an effective oil to prevent premature ageing of the skin.
In ancient times Spikenard was regarded as the most valuable of essential oils.
An account of Mary Magdalenes use of spikenard is to be found in the bible: "Mary bought in a pound of a very costly ointment, pure nard, and with it annointed the feet of Jesus, wiping them with her hair; the house was full of the scent of the ointment."
There are many traditional therapeutic uses. Dioscorides suggests that the herb is "warming and drying, good for nausea, flatulent indigestion, menstrual problems, inflammations and conjunctivitis"
